The 2026 ranges at a glance
The numbers below are the working ranges Calgary residential painters quote in 2026. They are labour plus materials, two coats of mid-tier acrylic, normal prep, before GST.
- Interior painting: $3.50–$6.00 per sqft of floor area
- Exterior painting: $4.00–$8.00 per sqft of wall area
- Cabinet refinishing: $2,800–$5,500 for an average kitchen
- Whole-house (interior + exterior): $4.50–$7.50 per sqft of floor area
- Commercial / strata: $2.50–$5.50 per sqft (volume rate)
These ranges are blended from three sources: CHBA-Alberta member surveys, the Canadian Painting Contractors Association regional rate guide, and the published quote ranges of major franchises operating in Calgary (CertaPro, WOW 1 DAY, Five Star). Independent painters generally land in the same range, sometimes a touch lower if they don't have franchise marketing overhead.
Where the variance comes from
A quote at the low end of the range versus a quote at the high end isn't usually one contractor being honest and another being greedy. Both can be correct quotes for different scopes. The honest cost drivers, in order of impact:
- Prep work required. A wall that needs patching, sanding, and a stain-blocking primer takes 3x the labour of a clean wall. The biggest swing factor in any quote.
- Paint quality tier. Builder-grade paint costs $40/gal, premium is $110/gal. For a 1,400 sqft home, the materials difference is $200–$400.
- Storey count (exterior). 2-storey is +25%, 3-storey is +55%. Scaffolding and ladder time is real labour.
- Trim, doors, ceilings. Each adds 15–30% to a walls-only quote. Lots of trim (built-ins, crown moulding, French doors) compounds quickly.
- Colour change vs refresh. Same colour, two coats is the standard. Light over dark needs a primer coat or three regular coats. Adds $200–$600.
- Access and protection. Furniture moving, floor covering, lift rental for vaulted ceilings — each is $100–$400.
Whole-house projects
"Whole-house" usually means interior walls, ceilings, trim, doors, and sometimes exterior. Calgary contractors price these as a bundle and the per-sqft rate drops because they're not paying for repeated mobilization.
- 1,400 sqft bungalow, interior only, complete (walls + ceilings + trim + doors): $7,000–$13,000
- 1,800 sqft two-storey, interior only, complete: $9,500–$17,000
- 2,500 sqft infill, interior only, complete: $14,000–$24,000
- 1,400 sqft bungalow, interior + exterior bundle: $13,000–$22,000
- 1,800 sqft two-storey, interior + exterior bundle: $18,000–$32,000
Whole-house pricing assumes you let the painter sequence the work and don't keep changing colours mid-project. If you want a different colour for every room and three sample boards per room, expect a colour-consultation fee on top.
When Calgary painting prices spike
Painter rates move with the construction calendar. Calgary's pattern in 2026:
- March–April: shoulder season, lowest rates, easiest to book your preferred contractor
- May–July: peak demand, exterior season is in full swing, prices at the top of the range
- August: still busy but contractors are slotting in last summer jobs, occasional shoulder deals
- September–October: interior demand spikes as people prep for hosting, exterior tapers
- November–February: interior only, lower rates, but you'll want to be flexible on smell and ventilation
If price is the priority, book interior work for late February or November. If contractor choice is the priority (you want a specific painter), commit 6–8 weeks ahead of when you want the work done.
How to compare three quotes fairly
The biggest mistake Calgary homeowners make is comparing quotes by total dollar amount without normalizing scope. Here's a 4-step process for an apples-to-apples comparison:
- Define your scope before quoting. Write down rooms, walls, ceilings, trim, doors. Specify two coats. Note any prep you already know about (patches, wallpaper to remove).
- Give every painter the same scope sheet. Either email it or hand it over at the site visit. Ask them to itemize.
- Compare line by line. Same prep, same paint tier, same coat count, same trim treatment. If one quote is dramatically lower on a line item, ask why.
- Confirm warranty and inclusions in writing. "5-year labour warranty" should appear on the quote, not just verbally.
When the scope is locked, three quotes from reputable Calgary painters typically land within 15% of each other. If they don't, somebody is reading the scope differently — clarify before committing.
Red flags in a Calgary painter quote
Things to watch for when comparing quotes:
- No WCB-Alberta number on the quote. Required for any contractor with employees. If they don't have it, your home insurance may not cover a worker injury.
- Cash-only or large up-front deposits. Standard Calgary deposit is 20–30% on signing, balance on completion. Anyone demanding 50%+ up front is a risk.
- Single-coat quotes without a price-per-coat callout. The default is two coats. One coat as the baseline is a corner-cutter.
- No mention of primer for dark-to-light or stain-prone areas. Skipping primer is the #1 reason paint jobs fail visibly.
- "$1.50/sqft" type offers. Below $2/sqft on interior is below cost. Either it's a bait-and-switch, the prep is being skipped, or it's an offshore lead-gen site with no actual painter behind it.
- No physical site visit. A real quote requires walking the rooms or the exterior. A phone quote based on square footage alone is a starting estimate, not a binding number.
